Conservation

The Conservation Committee is involved with everything from trail maintenance to energy efficiency…from teaching kids about the natural world to participating in citizen science projects. Join us!

Land & Water

The Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) is a visionary and bipartisan federal funding program for protecting our nation’s most special places. From Sterling Forest in the New York Highlands, to White Cap Mountain in Maine, to the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, LWCF has funded the protection of some of our most iconic landscapes and trails in the Northeast. Congress voted in support of permanently reauthorizing LWCF in February 2019. AMC applauds our elected officials for their overwhelming support to permanently reauthorize LWCF.

Climate & Energy

Clean air and the health of the forests and waters of the Northeast are at risk from air pollution and climate change caused by the burning of fossil fuels. Public lands also face significant threats from the inappropriate development and siting of energy generation and transmission projects. Together, these issues make energy efficiency and conservation a core focus area for AMC. To preserve the integrity and health of our diminishing open spaces and public lands, we must reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and large-scale centralized energy generation and distribution.

Trails

AMC’s long experience in promoting landscape level conservation from Maine to Washington DC, our large and active volunteer and outdoor recreation community, and our history of coalition building around regional conservation issues puts us in an exceptional position to address the challenges facing our region and nation in the coming decade.

Get Involved

Join AMC in protecting the mountains, rivers, forests, and trails of our region. Learn about and speak up on issues that threaten the Northeast outdoors as well as opportunities to ensure that treasured locations and landscapes can be enjoyed for generations to come.

Citizen Science

Mountain Watch is a citizen science program engaging hikers in hands-on monitoring of air quality and climate change. Through activities along the trail and at AMC high huts, we provide opportunities to learn about air pollution’s impacts to visibility, climate trends in the mountains, and the impacts of recent climate change on plant flowering and fruiting times and other seasonal biological events.

Volunteer

Join a crew for a day, weekend, or up to four weeks! Projects can match any ability level and are offered year-round.
